Design, Build and Display

Holding Oppo Neo 5 in hands, we can immediately notice that Oppo has paid attention to subtle design details and though the price tag puts some limitations, it is not a  half hearted effort. Neo 5 is mostly rectangular compact and feels solid.The rear  glass like plastic back cover accumulates smudges and on the front side, navigation keys below the display are not backlit.

The touch is sensitive but the display resolution and sharpness is nothing to be excited about. The 4.5 Inch panel has 480 x 854 pixel resolution, which amounts to 220 pixels per inches. The display is still useable, but the lack of pixels is discernable in practical usage. Viewing angles and colors are again average.

Performance and Software

The handset is powered by MT6752 quad core chipset with 1 GB RAM. Around 500 MB RAM is available on first boot. MT6752 is a very popular 32 bit SoC from last year and we have had ample experience with this budget MediaTek chip.

Performance was smooth in our testing, but with only 1 GB RAM on board, we expect the performance to falter over a period of usage for moderate or heavy users. Basic users should be fine though. The handset isn’t meant for high end gaming but you won’t face any trouble playing casual games. Web browsing and other day to day activities worked consistently well. We didn’t find any heating issue in Neo 5. For those interested in benchmark scores, the device scored 12, 820 on Antutu, 56.5 Fps on Nenamarks 2 and 660 on Vellamo (multicore). The software is Color OS based on Android 4.4.2 KitKat. Buying a KitKat phone today could mean compatibility issues with a few apps a few months down the line. Gesture support is included and works well. Color OS is consistent with what we are familiar with in terms of looks and design, though several features have been removed and rightly so. It is not an unnecessarily heavy OS.

Camera and Internal Storage

The rear camera on Oppo Neo 5 is among the better 8 MP cameras that we have come across. Shutter speed is fast and you can capture surprisingly good shots in day lighting. As always, low light performance deteriorates, but still noise is less and color reproduction is quite accurate. The 2 MP front camera clicks great selfies too. Internal storage is 8GB and you can further add another 32 GB MicroSD secondary storage. USB OTG is also supported but you have to activate it from the settings first.

Battery and Other Features

More or less, Oppo Neo 5 offers one day battery backup. Basic and moderate users won’t have to fear running out of charge through the day, but you cant expect to go beyond that. Call quality is good. Loudspeaker can get blocked when the phone is lying on a flat surface, but is otherwise loud enough. Charger included in the box outputs 1 Ampere current.

Conclusion

Oppo Neo 5 is meant for basic users who just need to access basic smartphone functionality, connect on social media apps and watch a few videos. It doesn’t offer the best display or most horsepower in its class, but benefits from a great design, solid build quality and a good camera.
