The device comes with specifications you’d expect in a budget mid-range smartphone of today – a dual core processor, 512MB RAM and a big – 5 inch – screen. Yes, it does remind us about the uber popular Canvas 2, too! Let us go ahead with the quick review of this new device.
Camera And Internal Storage
The Canvas Fun A76’s rear houses a 5MP main camera, which will be assisted by an LED Flash and other regular features we see on smartphone cameras of today that include autofocus, geo-tagging, etc. You can expect this shooter to be on par with what you saw on the Canvas 2. On the front of the phone sits a 0.3MP unit that will find its use in video calls. There are phones that offer better front cameras, but thankfully not many in the country use their phones for video calling as yet, so this minor shortcoming can be overlooked safely. As you might have expected by now (judging by the phone’s calibre), the device comes with the standard 4GB ROM we see on most budget devices, and which is something not particularly liked by users. However, the storage can be expanded up to 32GB via microSD.
Processor And Battery
The Canvas Fun A76 comes with a 1.2 GHz dual core processor, which we suspect to be the Mediatek MT6577. Anyway, a dual core processor is the least you should go for in this day and age, since most applications of today demand the processing power. The phone should serve average users well – WhatsApp, web browsing, calls and light gaming. However, if you try to get too much out of the dual core processor, you might be a little disappointed. Heavy gaming would be tough to carry out on the device, and the device would find it’s primary usage in the productivity segment. This means the phone would suit professionals and businessmen well. The phone will have a 2000mAh unit for the battery. Many manufacturers have upped this segment by a bit, but most budget devices still seem to come with a 2000mAh battery. Having said that, we should let you know that a 2000mAh is not bad at all, especially considering the price. You can expect the phone to las t a good 24 hours with 3-4hours of screen on time.
Display And Features
The phone comes with a 5 inch display, which seems to be the favourite as far as domestic manufacturers are concerned. This 5 inch panel features a FWVGA resolution of 854×480 pixels, which means the phone will have a sub par pixel density. The display might still suffice for reading and browsing, however, enjoying multimedia on the device would be a daunting task for the average user. The device would be shipping with Android v4.2 preinstalled which is a plus since quite a few phones of today are still stuck on outdated Android versions.
Comparison
We’re still surprised by this sudden interest in dual core phones shown by domestic manufacturers, and the Canvas Fun A76 just acts as a catalyst! Coming back, the device does have a few competitors that threaten Micromax of market share. These devices include – Sony’s Xperia M and Huawei Ascend P1, devices which come with 1GB of RAM, Celkon’s Signature One A107+, XOLO A500S, among other devices.
Key Specs
Conclusion
The Canvas Fun A76 comes with rather average specifications for a mid-ranged device, and has nothing new to offer. Also, being priced at 8,499 INR, the device is among the more expensive ones when compared to the XOLO A500S, Celkon Signature One, and the likes. The difference is not just a few hundred rupees; we’re talking of a difference in excess of a 1,000 bucks (Celkon Signature One A107+ priced at 7,299 INR and XOLO A500S for 6,999 just to give you an idea). This pretty much means that phones like the A107+ and the A500S are a better buy when compared to the Canvas Fun A76, unless Micromax slashes the prices.
