To make your YouTube experience a little easier, I am going to list down 3 easier ways to control YouTube volume.
Use keyboard shortcuts to control YouTube volume
Keyboard shortcuts are faster to use and don’t disrupt your focus, so they are always better than using the mouse. YouTube also comes with a bunch of keyboard shortcuts to control the video player, including volume. To adjust YouTube volume with keyboard shortcuts, first, make sure the video player is visible and in focus. Afterward, press the “Up Arrow” key to increase the volume by 5%, and press the “Down Arrow” key to decrease the volume by 5%. You can press and hold any of these keys to quickly increase or decrease the volume. You can also hit the “M” key to mute or unmute the volume.
Use the mouse scroll wheel to control YouTube volume
This method isn’t too different from grabbing the volume slider with the mouse click, but it’s much easier to use and doesn’t require much precision. To make it work, hover your mouse cursor over the volume slider and scroll the mouse wheel up or down to adjust the volume. Make sure your mouse cursor is on the volume slider, otherwise the whole page will start scrolling. So yes, sometimes it can get annoying if you misplace the cursor, but it’s still easier than grabbing the slider bar.
Use a third-party Chrome extension to adjust Youtube volume
There are also third-party apps that can control YouTube volume and offer an easier way to adjust it. Below I am going to list two such extensions that can adjust YouTube volume in a much easier way.
YouTube Mouse Controls (Youtube Volume Scroll)
YouTube Mouse Controls is no longer available It’s a simple extension to control both YouTube volume and seek bar with the mouse scroll wheel. Similar to the 2nd method, you will scroll up or down to adjust the video volume. However, you just need to keep the mouse cursor anywhere on the video player, instead of the tiny volume slider. This makes it much easier to adjust the volume without requiring any precision.
Volume Manager
Technically, this extension doesn’t adjust the volume of the YouTube player, it controls the volume of the whole tab instead. However, it serves the same purpose as the overall volume is adjusted. Once the extension is installed, press and hold the “Alt” key and press the Up or Down arrow keys to adjust the volume. The great thing about this extension is that it doesn’t need the video player to be in focus to work, you can adjust the volume while being anywhere on the page. On top of that, it can also boost tab volume up to 8X more than the normal volume – perfect for those low-volume videos.
Ending thoughts
I personally prefer using the YouTube keyboard shortcuts to adjust video volume. It’s easier to use and you won’t have to reach the mouse at all. Although using a third-party extension is also a good way to easily adjust volume without disrupting your focus. Let us know in the comments if you know of any other easier way to control YouTube volume.
